Designed for athletes in the Training to Train and Learning to Compete stages of CKC's Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, this program supports athletes who have established a foundation of training experience and are ready to take the next step in their physical development.

Winter training focuses on developing the strength, aerobic endurance, speed, and overall athletic capacity required to support continued improvement on the water. Athletes will participate in a variety of training activities, including strength training, circuits, swimming, running, XC skiing, and canoe/kayak ergometer sessions.

An important focus of this program is developing consistent training habits, learning to manage increasing training demands, and building the physical foundation for success at provincial and national-level competition.

Athletes are encouraged to establish a regular weekly training routine appropriate to their goals and stage of development. We recognize the importance of participation in other sports and support athletes in balancing their commitments throughout the winter.

  • Program Fee: $570

  • Athlete Age Group: 2027 U14 or older (born 2013 or earlier)

  • Target Athletes: Athletes working toward provincial championship finals and/or qualification for the Canoe Kayak Canada National Championships in 2027. Also suitable for multi-sport athletes pursuing competitive paddling goals.

  • Commitment: Up to 6 training sessions per week, Monday through Saturday, including Saturday aerobic training.

  • Program Dates: November 16, 2026 – May 1, 2027

Please Note the Following:

Swimming – The CPCC will rent the Carleton Place Pool for training sessions 1–2 times per week between November and March. Swimming provides an excellent opportunity to develop cardiovascular fitness, improve general conditioning, and challenge athletes in a different environment. No previous competitive swimming experience is required, and sessions are designed to be supportive and low-pressure. CKO Sprint also hosts an annual canoe club swim meet in December.

XC Skiing – Cross-country skiing is an excellent tool for developing aerobic endurance and general fitness, both important components of success on the water. It provides an enjoyable, low-impact alternative to running and is widely used in sprint canoe/kayak training. Equipment and trail passes are the responsibility of athletes and families where applicable. CPCC coaches can assist with equipment recommendations before the season begins. CKO Sprint also hosts an annual canoe club XC ski race in February.

Saturday Training – Saturday morning sessions are an important component of the Performance Development program and count toward the weekly training total. Sessions focus primarily on longer aerobic activities such as XC skiing, running, and rowing. Locations and activities vary depending on weather conditions and athlete abilities. Some sessions may be completed independently, with instructions provided by coaches.

Holiday Closures: The club will be closed December 22 – January 4 and March 14–21. Training guidance will be provided for athletes to follow independently during these breaks.
